Material story

It’s not just mills and factories that have leftover stock. Tanneries also have the same production issues that leave them saddled with perfectly tanned, but unused, hides. Based on some recommendations from our leather factories, we took a mini road trip through the Tuscan tannery district in search of the finest Italian lamb and sheep hides.

After knocking on quite a few doors and touring a number of units, we finally found our favourite shearling qualities. Every hide we’ve chosen came from an animal raised nearby and was responsibly tanned using traditional methods.

It doesn’t get any more iconic than the biker, it’s become a cultural symbol of bad boys (and girls) everywhere.

Created in 1928 by Irving Schott, the ‘Perfecto’ biker jacket was built to be a more practical version of the button-up motorcycle jackets of the time. The cropped, snug fit and asymmetric zipper became its signature. The jacket surpassed its utilitarian roots and became synonymous with ‘cool’ in 1953’s The Wild One, in which Marlon Brando played a Perfecto-wearing leader of a biker gang.

By the 70s and 80s, punks and rock musicians redefined the jacket’s subversiveness. Part of the downtown New York City uniform, it was seen on the likes of The Ramones, Patti Smith and Debbie Harry just to name a few. Still tied to non-conformity and youth rebellion, the women in particular used it as a feminist symbol of equality–and just general badassery.

By the 90s, the jacket really became the wardrobe staple it is today. Supermodels like Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss were frequently seen in vintage biker jackets, both on and off duty, inspiring legions of their fans to try the jacket themselves.
