- Fabric story
We found these rolls in a specialist warehouse in Biella, Italy. Situated in the Northwestern corner of the country, Biella has been a centre of wool production for nearly 800 years. The town’s prime location in the foothills of the Alps provides locals with easy access to clean alpine waters, water which is critical to the production of wool. Wool production and dyeing require extensive washing and rinsing, and in earlier times, hydro-powered mills. Today the remaining mills in the region specialise in ultra high-quality wool, supplying luxury and heritage brands around the world.
- Garment care
We took this silhouette from a classic chesterfield coat. The coat was arguably named after Phillip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield. The Chesterfield was interesting as a fashion innovation because, unlike earlier coats, it did not have a waist seam, and was cut quite loosely around the body. This meant that Chesterfields were true overcoats: they could be put on over most other garments, and taken off easily when indoors.
Their introduction into women’s wardrobes, not surprisingly, also saw a huge adaptation in the coats style as they were re-structured to fit female bodies. The loose coat fit perfectly with the more active outdoors lifestyle women were beginning to adopt.
We have further modernised the style with a slightly dropped shoulder and a slimmer body.
